Nigerian duo Kelechi Iheanacho and Efe Ambrose will have the task of trying to do the impossible by preventing Lionel Messi and Barcelona from qualifying from a group stage of the UEFA Champions League for the first time since the new format started.
The Catalans have played in every Champions League until date and with the little Argentine they’ve been the most successful club in terms of trophies and reaching the last four in the new format of the competition.
However, clubs have grown ambitious over the years and looking to knock Barcelona off their perch. Manchester City for one got their former manager Pep Guardiola and he has shown faith in Kelechi Iheanacho whom he believe can help him deliver trophies this season which includes stopping Luis Enrique’s men from progressing out of Group C which also includes Celtic and Borussia Monchengladbach.
That to some people is an impossible task but like we’ve seen with football over the years, nothing is impossible with the beautiful game.
Iheanacho and his teammates at City came up against Barcelona last season in the UEFA Champions League and the Catalans came out tops but this time it will be different as they have a new manager, not just any other but one that virtually transformed the current Barcelona and gave Messi a new definition.
He knows Barcelona very well but sometimes it doesn’t always count as seen last season when Barcelona destroyed Pep’s Bayern Munich side.
It will be intriguing and fascinating all the way in Group C as Celtic with Nigerian defender Efe Ambrose hopes to make their mark in the UEFA Champions League under the guidance of Brendan Rodgers.
The former Liverpool manager will draw inspiration from the fact that the Reds hammered a Barcelona side with Messi and Suarez 4-0 in a pre-season match and the Catalans have already conceded two goals at home in the start of the new La Liga season despite winning 6-2 at home.
Celtic will fancy their chances, if they can maintain a high defensive discipline and take their chances when it comes at the other end.
Bundesliga outfit Monchengladbach can be a dangerous customer on their day but pundits choice to make it out of Group C is Barcelona and Manchester City, however, with big dreams a club like Celtic can cause an upset and join Manchester City in the next round.
So will Kelechi Iheanacho and Efe Ambrose get one over Lionel Messi and the gang? Honestly, that looks like the impossible dream because Barcelona are an impeccable side with a flourish of talent but great football moments are built on upsets and that’s why we love the game.
