Super Eagles self-exiled forward Victor Anichebe made his first start of the season in West Bromwich Albion’s 1-0 victory against Newcastle United on Monday night.
Baggies manager Tony Pulis referred the Nigerian ahead of Rickie Lambert and Saido Berahino and he nearly repaid that faith as early as in the second minute but his left foot shot was blocked.
The former Everton striker was very much in the thick of action as he bullied the Magpies backline but was thwarted by debutant goalkeeper Karl Darlow who was brave and determined to keep a clean sheet.
With twelve minutes left, Darlow could not stop a powerful header from former Manchester United midfielder Darren Fletcher who guided in a sumptuous cross from Claudio Yacob to hand West Brom an important 1-0 win.
Anichebe was substituted in the 88th minute for Rickie Lambert to a rousing applause from the fans, all of whom will hope he stays injury free after a good game at the Hawthorns.
