Salomon Rondon continued his recent good form for West Brom as he scored the only goal for the Baggies in a 1-0 victory against Manchester United.
Manchester United head into the encounter at the Hawthorns at the back of a four match winning run but it did not start as they anticipated as Spanish international Juan Mata received a red card after two yellow cards in the space of two minutes.
First he received a yellow after he blocked a Darren Fletcher freekick from less than the mandatory ten yards and he cynically tripped Fletcher and referee Mike Dean had no choice but to send him for an early bath which was his first career red card.
The Red Devils were lucky not to concede a penalty as Daley Blind’s high foot caught Saido Berahino in the face just on the edge of the box but the freekick was wasted. Craig Dawson sends an instinctive shot which dipped just wide of the post from 25 yards as the away team survives.
The home side continued to press for the opener – a long ball was floated to Saido Berahino, who chested down for Stephane Sessegnon but the striker’s shot was saved by David De Gea.
The Baggies had the better exchanges of the second half as they made good advantage of their one man advantage. Manchester United’s best chance came when Anthony Martial wriggled his way into the box and his cut back was met by Marcus Rashford but his shot was deflected for a corner.
The lively Jesse Lingard curled a right foot shot from outside the area but it only found the top of the net and at the other end Salomon Rondon scored for Tony Pulis men as the home crowd chanted away.
West Brom’s 1-0 win over Manchester United is their seventh 1-0 win in the premier league this season.
