Kenyan international Victor Wanyama may be attracting a lot of interest from various clubs but today, Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger dismissed any chance of signing the defensive midfielder as he has his eyes set on other targets.
The gunners made enquires for the strong midfielder last summer and rumours circulated on Friday that the former Monaco manager may be monitoring the Saints midfielder with a view to signing him in the January transfer window.
“I rate the player but we are not on the case,” he said, as reported by Sky Sports. “We will be out there and see what we can do. But at the moment we have the whole of December to go and we are in a good position in the Premier League.”
Arsenal are currently just two points behind league leaders Leicester City ahead of the weekend’s fixtures against Aston Villa and will be buoyed by their triumph in the Champions League in midweek as their 3-0 win over Olympiakos which sealed their spot in the knockout stages of the tournament.
And the Frenchman used the opportunity to hail the striker Olivier Giroud as one of the best in Europe.
“I think he’s [among the top strikers] because he plays for one of the best clubs in Europe and he scores goals,” Wenger told reporters.
“If you look at the number of games and the number of goals, you have to give him credit. He’s not only a goalscorer, he’s a guy who puts work in for the team. I think he’s among the best strikers in Europe.”
