Kenyan international Victor Wanyama scored the third goal as Southampton thumped relegation-bound Newcastle United 3-1 in an English Premier League clash staged at the St. Mary’s Stadium in Southampton, on Saturday 9 April.
Irish International Shane Long gave the hosts the lead on just the third minute after weaving his way past the Newcastle defence and Italian Graziano Pelle doubled the hosts’ lead seven minutes to the break after a swift counter attack.
Wanyama got the hosts’ third five minutes after the break, finishing from Pelle’s rebound to give the hosts a 3-0 lead.
England international Andros Townsend pulled one back for the Magpies but it was a little too late.
The goal and win is a welcome boost for Wanyama, who has not had the best of times with both his club and country.
After 33 round of matches, the win propels Southampton to seventh on the log with 50 points with Newcastle dropping deeper to 19th on 25 points.
Southampton travels to Merseyside to face Everton in their next outing with Newcastle entertaining Swansea City.
