The win over Mauritius was a rare one as far as performances by the Kenya national team Harambee Stars is concerned and the same was received with surprise and elation in equal measure with fans and players alike taking to social media to react.
Kenya won 5 – 2, the first victory for the senior team since the 1 – 0 win over Comoros over a year ago and the win was also the first for head coach Bobby Williamson.
An elated Victor Wanyama, the team’s captain posted his jersey, shin guards branded in Kenyan flag colors and his armband in celebration of the win on his Instagram page while Kenyans on Twitter were literally on fire with witty posts on the win.
Ayub Timbe scored the second goal directly from a corner kick and @LoftiWada captured it in this tweet; “A Kenyan player scored an Olympic goal today vs Mauritius. Not a very usual event,” he tweeted.
A real time twist had to be given to the win with the tribulations of FIFA President Sepp Blatter coming to the fore:
@mqhlay tweeted: “BREAKING: Harambee Stars is leading — even the technical bench and players are surprised.” And he added “There had to be an oddity, a rarity: #HarambeeStars won — and the indefatigable@SeppBlatter gets suspended.”
Others were still in shock after the game with the scoreline reading 5 – 2 in Kenya’s favor:

The team did not have the best preparation for the game and the congratulatory messages showed as much;

Ferdinand Omondi tweeted “#HarambeeStars win 5-2 AWAY in Mauritius. World Cup qualifier. No, this is not a prank.”
For those who had placed bets against Kenya, it was not a good day, while other went on to call for a national holiday;

@Kapkirwok declared: “#HarambeeStars scoring 5 goals against 2. Tomorrow will be Holiday in Kenya.”
The national team is set to return later on Thursday to prepare for the return leg on Sunday 11 October with the aggregate winner set for a game against Cape Verde in the second round of qualifiers.
