Gor Mahia winger Innocent Wafula has been dropped from the Kenya national team squad just a day after being called up apparently for failing to prove his eligibility as a Kenyan citizen.
The player has Ugandan roots and it has been claimed in a number of sources that he is indeed a Ugandan though the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) was hoping to bank on him in upcoming Harambee Stars matches.
A statement from the FKF earlier in the day confirmed that the move was meant to cushion the federation and the country from the repercussions that would come with fielding him with questions over his nationality.
He now has to produce proof of Kenyan citizenship in order to be allowed back to the national team.
“We have decided to drop him for now until he produces his documents for verification. It will be a big blunder if we field him without ascertaining his nationality. He is a good player, a national team material but for now he will stay out until we verify everything,” the statement noted.
