Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal says they have a good chances of beating Liverpool and overturning the deficit they suffered from the first leg.
The Red Devils host their bitter rivals at Old Trafford on Thursday in a Europa League round of 16, second leg lash having suffered a 2-0 defeat in the first leg and they must win by at least three goals if they are to progress, or two goals to force the game into extra time.
And despite how daunting it seems, the embattled Dutchman is confident his team can undo the damage.
“The chance is there to beat Liverpool. We have to believe in it and it starts with the players of course, and also with the fans. The fans have their input on the pitch. I have spoken only with the players about the victory and we have to believe in it. We owe the fans a big result.
“We only have to think about beating Liverpool. We have to beat them 2-0, not 3-0, in 90 minutes. We have to do it 2-0, and then we have the chance in extra time. First it’s 2-0 and you know we have scored goals within three or four minutes this season, so it is possible.
“Our aim is to beat Liverpool and if we can do that with a two-goal difference without conceding, fantastic – then we have extra time and we have our home fans. We don’t think about conceding, we think about scoring goals. We did it against Midtjylland.”
