Iceland based Ugandan keeper Abel Dhaira is battling abdominal cancer, his club IBV Vestmannaeyjar has revealed.
The keeper has been on a second stint with the Iceland club but was hospitalized for close to 6 weeks now at Nsambya Hospital in Kampala.
He returned to Ugana in January and doctors confirmed the ailment as cancer and not the suspected ulcers, abdominal pain and typhoid that the goalkeeper was often complaining about.
According to a statement on the club’s website, Dhaira had been excluded from the national team setting in recent months due to the abdominal pain which has now spread to other organs.

“Abel Dhaira, played for the club, had big problems with illness in recent months. He was out in Uganda for the year due to cancer in the abdomen which has now spread to more organs. Abel will begin treatment in the country next week. The company sponsors and stand firmly behind Abel and will seek to ensure he gets the best medical care available,” the statement read.
Dhaira, has not featured for the Uganda Cranes since 2013.
