The CECAFA Senior Challenge resumed on Monday 30 November after a rest day on Sunday with two matches on the cards, Uganda taking on guest team Malawi in the opening game of the day as hosts Ethiopia played Tanzania.
In the first game Uganda made easy work of the Malawi opposition, beating the tournament’s guest team 2 – 0 to sail through to the semi finals.
Skipper Farouk Miya and Ceaser Okhuti’s goals either side of the first half secured the win.
In the second game Tanzania and Ethiopia were squaring out for the second straight game after advancing from Group A and it was Tanzania who once again took the lead courtesy of skipper John Bocco’s header on the 25th minute.
Ethiopia recovered well in the second half and won a penalty after Shomari Kapombe’s foul on Yissack Bereket on the 47th minute of the game. Skipper of the day Gatoch Panom stepped forward and expertly drove the penalty past Said Mohamed.
The game almost turned ugly as tempers flared with the growing tensions but all went on and the game progressed to the penalties to break the tie.
Ethiopia goalkeeper Abel Mamo was the hero on the day, saving Jonas Mkude’s and Shomari Kapombe’s kicks to see Ethiopia win 4 – 3.
The two winning sides will face off in the semi final on Thursday.
