Kenyan Premier League (KPL) giants AFC Leopards are set for more stormy waters ahead with the nullification of the two sponsorship deals signed with betting companies SportPesa and Betway.
The club has in the recent days been dogged by management wrangles and in the wake of the Tuesday unveiling of a deal with Betway, it has emerged that a different faction of the club has also signed a deal with SportPesa.
The two factions were directed by the Sports Disputes Tribunal (SDT) to work in harmony for the club but clearly, they could not agree on the sponsorship and the Tribunal chair, Mr. John Ohaga, who is also the mediator for the two factions, termed the deals invalid and called on both sponsors to consider renegotiating the deals.
“Neither of the deals signed were sanctioned by the tribunal. I discussed with the IMC about this development and we failed to reach an agreement and I have also discussed with the two sponsors who are categorical that they are in their rightful place and defend the deals.
“The sponsors are ready to go to court to defend their stands but my stand remains that litigation will make this worse and I will be stating in court that as far as the tribunal is concerned, the contracts signed are invalid,” he said.
