Arsenal may be breaking the bank as it were during this January transfer window as the Gunners are said to be reportedly planning a club-record bid of £42m for Borussia Dortmund striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang this month.
Aubameyang who is one of the three nominees for the CAF African Footballer of the year has enjoyed a blistering season as he is Bundesliga’s top scorer this season with a return of 17 goals in 18 league appearances, plus a further seven in European competitions.
According to The Sun, Gunners manager Arsene Wenger has made the 26-year old Gabon international his top transfer target as he looks to guide the Premier League leaders to their first title in 12 years.
“An intermediary has made contact with Dortmund about Pierre-Emerick making a move to Arsenal,” a source told the newspaper.
“Wenger knows the fee is very high – yet this is a striker who can make a massive difference for him. But there is a lot of interest in him.”
Manchester United, Chelsea and Liverpool have also been linked with a move for Aubameyang this window.
Already Wenger has stated that he would be going for very few players in the transfer window even as he hinted that his first buy should have been fully sorted in 10 days.
