After being under tremendous pressure with his job at Orlando Pirates last week, coach Eric Tinkler is quickly transforming his reputation in Soweto.
Tinkler’s now picked up two impressive wins in a row, first against Kaizer Chiefs on Saturday, and then against Ajax Cape Town on Wednesday night.
“It was a tough game tonight. They came out highly motivated and put us under pressure right form the first whistle. We dealt with that well in the beginning and were very good on the transition. We caught them on the counter and we got the two-goal lead,” Tinkler told the South African media.
“Defensively after that, though, we were making way too many errors, trying to play the ball in difficult areas and creating chances for them. We tried to rectify that at half time, but they came out even stronger,” added the coach.
Pirates went 2-0 up with Kermit Erasmus and Lehlohonolo Majoro impressing from early on, but then Ajax’s Toriq Losper pulled one back and made for a nervy finish where the Cape Town side placed Bucs under pressure.
“Both teams had so many chances and we just didn’t stick it away, but I am happy to get the three points,” said Tinkler.
Now, he’s looking to improve even more when Pirates take on Chiefs in the Telkom KO on the weekend.
“We create so many chances, particularly on the counter-attack and our decision-making is not there. That last pass or last decision we make is always letting us down,” added Tinkler.
“That is a mindset you have to try and change in the players and make them a little bit more confident and a little bit more positive in that zone.
“What is very encouraging for me is that we are always coming out with a positive attitude and a positive mentality to win games.”
