When Santos clash with Milano United in a Cape NFD derby at Athlone on Wednesday afternoon (3-30pm), there will be a host of players doing battle against former friends and colleagues.
Milano United head coach Boebie Solomons will also be up against his former employers, having represented Santos with aplomb as both a player and a manager for many years. He will be hoping for a second consecutive derby win against a former club, following last week’s 2-0 win over Cape Town All Stars.
Also set to potentially line up against their former team Santos are Milano players such as captain Nasief Morris, on-form goal scorer Gregory Roelf and goalkeeper Lee Langeveldt.
The Peoples’ Team meanwhile in their ranks several players who have spent time at Milano, including Devon Saal, Broderick Burds, Tashrique Goldman, Brent Adonis and Ricardo Skippers, all in all making for a mouth-watering prospect of a fiery derby battle.
Recent form favours the Kinnes, who have won all three of their matches in 2016 to move to sixth position, three points off the play-offs. Santos, sitting 10th, are yet to win this year and coach Zeca Marques will likely be looking to the passion of a local derby as a means for his side to reignite their fire.
Head to head stats between the two sides offer little clue as to who the favourites may be – in the eight previous matches played, each team has won twice, with four draws.
Milano have recently bolstered their squad with the signing of striker Houston Hills as well as Aldrich Viljoen, while Santos recently announced two new signings: Andile Nqabeni from Moroka Swallows, and Mfanufuthi Dlamini, who arrived from Royal Eagles.
