The Kenya women national team Harambee Starlets fell at the last hurdle in the CECAFA Women Championship final after going down 1 – 2 to Tanzania in Jinja, Uganda on Tuesday 20 September.
Tanzania striker Mwahamisi Omar was in fine form on the afternoon notching a first half brace that relegated Christine Nafula’s goal in the second half to a mere consolation.
Harambee Starlets advanced to the final as favourites but it never came to pass against an astute and tactically disciplined Tanzania side with Omar netting the opener moments after Kenya had squandered a glorious chance.
Kenya contested the second Tanzania goal after Omar seemed to have handled the ball prior to sending a scorching effort past Vivian Akinyi but the referee gave Starlets a deaf ear, seeing Tanzania head to the break leading 2 – 0.
The second half had Nafula reduce the deficit but it was not enough and now Kenya will have to quickly forget about the setback and prepare seriously for the African Women Cup of Nations (AWCON) in Cameroon in November.
