Angel di Maria has revealed he considered following Lionel Messi into international retirement and even going to therapy following three final losses in a row with Argentina.
The former Manchester United winger has made the stunning revelation ahead of his national side’s World Cup qualifier against Peru.
“When Messi retired, I thought about doing the same,” Di Maria told TyC Sports.
“You can lose a final, but three in a row, that’s something different. I thought about leaving the national team, but my wife and my father stopped me.
“I almost started therapy, but in the end I decided it was something I had to figure out by myself.
“If I lose another final, that’s it.”
Barcelona star Lionel Messi had announced his retirement after Argentina lost to Chile on penalties in the Copa America final, though he later reversed that decision and has since returned to the Argentina side.
The Albiceleste will take on Peru and Paraguay in their upcoming qualifiers and Edgardo Bauza’s side lie in third place in the standings.
Bauza will be without talismanic captain Messi as the striker is suffering from a groin injury so Argentina are likely to look to Gonzalo Higuain and Sergio Aguero to take up the goalscoring duties.
