Kakamega based Western Stima U20 have been dethroned after failing to successfully negotiate their way through the KPL U20 tournament’s group stages and will be leaving the competition after just three matches.
For a club that went all the way to bag the 2013 title, this will pass as a great underachievement, especially given that the team had set the target to retain the title. Despite the setback, club chairman Laban Jobita has stated that the team will not be disbanded.
Jobita, speaking to journalists after the team was dumped out courtesy of a 1 – 1 draw with AFC Leopards in Group A, a match they had to win, Jobita said a number of players in the team have been marked for promotion to the senior team.
“We wanted to retain the title but we did not reach that ambition. Still, we take positives from this all; at least in the three matches we have seen some brilliance from the youngsters and my assurance is that the team will not be disbanded. We will keep them together with the aim to promote a number gradually to the senior team.
“We did it with the 2013 team and we will do the same with this one as well,” he said.
