The chances of Nigeria League champions Enyimba progressing to the next phase in the CAF Champions League received a big boost on Sunday as the Peoples’ Elephant crushed Burundi club, Vital’O 5-1 in the their First Leg First Round CAF Champions League clash in Port Harcourt.
Despite struggling all season, Enyimba were in their right element on Sunday at the Adokiye Amasiemaka Stadium as they banged in three goals in the first half before adding two more in the second half.
Stephen Chukwude scored the first goal in the 21st minute before Mfon Udoh added another goal seven minutes later.
Chukwude completed his brace in the 38th minute to give Enyimba three-goal lead in the first half.
In the second half Udoh also completed his brace just before the hour-mark, while Vital’O pulled one back, Leonard Ugochukwu ensured that Enyimba have a four-goal advantage with his 85th minute strike.
With the big win, the second leg in Bujumbura in a week’s time looks like a mere formality for Enyimba.
