Beckham’s MLS free-kick record smashed by Giovinco

Sebastian Giovinco

Beckham had scored the joint-most free-kicks in the MLS before the Italian struck twice in Toronto FC’s 4-1 victory over DC United on Sunday to move his tally to seven goals from set-pieces since he moved to MLS last year from Parma.

The Italian international went into Sunday’s tie without a goal in his last eight games for Toronto FC, all starts, which has been a very worrying drought for the 2015 MLS MVP and Golden Boot-winner. But on Saturday, he scored a stunning hat trick, including two gorgeous free kick goals.

speaking to the press after the game, Giovico said: “Yes, I’m back. I’m happy to have scored. We’re still a little behind [in the standings], but it’s a good start.

“Like I’ve said before, for a striker, scoring is always very important,” he added. “Not scoring for eight games is really difficult. I just tried to stay calm. We tried to stay together during that time, and hopefully this is going to push us forward.” The Italian is quoted as saying on the MLS official website.

Toronto FC and their fans will be hoping this is the start of the Italian’s resurgence. TFC are in playoff position with half of the season done, but they are playing well below expectations with the starpower on their roster.

It hasn’t helped TFC either that Giovinco’s drought came just as star striker Jozy Altidore injured his hamstring yet again, sidelining him the last two months. Altidore returned to action on Saturday and, although he entered the match after Giovonco’s first two splendid goals, it’s another good sign for TFC.
