Spanish side Atletico Madrid has handed a one year contract extension to club veteran Tiago Mendes despite the player having spent a large part of the current campaign on the sidelines with a broken leg, suffered in November.
The 35 – year old former Chelsea midfielder joined the team in 2009. He returned to action on the final day of the season and still the club felt he is still needed at the Vicente Calderon, with the club scheduled to take on arch rivals Real Madrid in the UEFA Champions League final.
The club Tweeted earlier in the day the confirmation that the veteran has been handed a year’s extension.
In reaction, the club’s Sporting Director Jose Luiz Caminero described him as a vital player and added; “He is a player who contributes lots of experience on and off the field of play, which makes him beloved by team-mates and fans alike. He is a key pillar of the group.”
The player stated his elation at the new deal: “I am very pleased to be able to stay another year at this great club.”
