It was another weekend of action for Nigerian players abroad as they returned to their clubs following the international break. As always, we bring you the exploits of several Nigerian players abroad and they fared, including those who failed to feature.
Kelechi Iheanacho started in the absence of Sergio Aguero in the Manchester derby at Old Trafford. The youngster scored one and made another as Manchester City beat their city rivals 2-1 on Saturday. The goal represented his ninth from 13 shots in the Premier League.
Also on the scoresheet over the weekend was Odion Ighalo, who opened his account for the season as Watford came from behind to beat West Ham 4-2. It was his first goal of the season, and he was replaced by Isaac Success, who is yet to start for the Hornets since he joined in the summer.
Alex Iwobi returned from a thigh injury that has kept him out for the past three weeks, as he came off the bench in the 75th minute to help Arsenal to a last-gasp win against Southampton. Compatriot Chuba Akpom was however not listed for the Gunners.
Meanwhile, Moses Odubajo was missing for Hull in their 1-1 draw with Burnley, as he is still nursing an injury.
Ahmed Musa was a 46th minute entrant for champions Leicester City but couldn’t help them as they were thrashed 4-1 by Liverpool.
In the Championship, Sone Aluko played all 90 minutes for Fulham but couldn’t prevent them from going down 1-0 at Craven Cottage.
Blackburn Rovers held Queens Park Rangers to a 1-1 draw and Nigeria international Hope Akpan was on from start to finish for Rovers. He was cautioned in the 47th minute.
The duo of Leon Balogun and Karim Onisiwo featured for Mainz 05 in their dramatic 4-4 draw at home to Hoffenheim. While Balogun started and saw the entire action, Onisiwo was introduced in the 79th minute as Mainz let a first half four-goal lead slip.
Moses Simon was on the scoresheet and lasted the entirety of the game, while Anderson Esiti also saw all 90 minutes of action for Gent, in their 3-0 dismantling of Lokeren. Meanwhile, compatriot Rabiu Ibrahim was only introduced in the 81st minute. Both Esiti and Ibrahim joined the club this summer.
Wilfried Ndidi played all 90 minutes as usual for Genk, but his best wasn’t enough to prevent them from going down 2-0 at Standard Liege. Meanwhile, Elderson Echiejile who recently joined Liege on loan from Monaco was not listed for the game.
Joseph Akpala was not listed for Oostende in their 2-1 loss to Eupen. Meanwhile, all three Nigerians – George Jamabo, Anthony Bassey and Henry Onyekuru – at Eupen all featured, with Onyekuru starting and lasting 89 minutes. Bassey was on for the last 10 minutes, while Jamabo did not feature.
Gbolahan Salami scored a brace for KuPs as they beat Mariehamn 2-1, and he lasted the entire duration. The other three Nigerians at the club, Azubuike Egwuekwe, Aliyu Abubakar and Paul Onobi all featured and played the entire duration, with Egwuekwe receiving an 86th minute yellow card.
Nnamdi Oduamadi was on the bench all through in HJK’s 2-0 win at PS Kemi, while Taye Taiwo was not listed.
In the Super Lig, Kenneth Omeruo made his debut and was on for the entire duration for newly promoted Alanyaspor and went unblemished as his side held Genclirbirligi to a 0-0 draw.
It was also a debut weekend for Emem Eduok for Kasimpasa, but couldn’t help them avoid a defeat as they lost to Baseksihir. He was introduced in the 83rd minute.
Also in the Super Lig, Godfrey Oboabona featured for 90 minutes for Rizespor and helped his side keep a clean sheet in their 1-0 defeat of Akhisar Genclikspor, but Believe Atiemwen was only introduced just seconds to the end of the game for Rizespor.
In the TFF 1 Lig (second division), 2013 Africa Cup of Nations hero Sunday Mba opened the scoring for Yeni Malatyaspor against Denizlispor, they couldn’t hold on as they conceded to draw 1-1. Rio Olympics 2016 Bronze medalist Okechukwu Azubuike came on for the second 45 minutes, while Austin Amutu was introduced in the 65th minute.
Former youth international David Abwo started for Giresunspor but lasted 82 minutes in their 1-1 draw with Sanliursfaspor. Onyekachi Okafor was however introduced in the 75th minute.
Super Eagles striker Brown Ideye continued his fine form for Olympiacos as he netted a hat-trick in their 6-1 routing of Veria on Sunday. The former Ocean Boys striker was on for the entirety of the game.
