No blame on Gareth, Davis declares

Northern Ireland skipper Steven Davis has refused to apportion blame on his team mate Gareth McAuley after his own goal that saw Wales beat his team 1 – 0 to advance to the quarter finals of the 2016 Euro Championships on Saturday 25 June.

McAuley turned in Bale’s low cross on the 74th minute to see Northern Ireland lose after a great display and creation of the best chances but Davis says it is disappointing to exit the tournament but noted that his team mate was not to blame.

Northern Ireland were not backed to go that far in the tournament and David says it has been a great experience and lauded the fans for their great support throughout.

“We are disappointed in the manner we lost and Gareth didn’t deserve that because he has been excellent. We lay no blame on him at all. We are devastated to be out but it’s been a great journey and we have learned a lot from the experience.

“We put everything into it and had the better chances in the first half but it wasn’t meant to be our day. The fans were magnificent again and they have enjoyed the journey as much as us. We are just sad to see it end,” he said.
