Serie A wrap: Pogba scores to give Juve nine-point lead

It is another week to take a look at how it went down in Serie A over the weekend, as the end of the season approaches.

Champions Juventus need just three more wins to wrap up their 32nd league title, following the emphatic 4-0 win over Palermo on Sunday, as Napoli’s 2-0 loss at Inter opened the gap to nine points. Goals from Sami Khedira, Paul Pogba, Juan Cuadrado and Simone Padoin were enough to see off the Sicily club.

Fiorentina also continued their stake for a place on the continent next season with a 3-1 win over another continental hopeful, Sassuolo. AS Roma however suffered a setback as they had to rely on the old warhorse, Franesco Totti to secure a point in a 3-3 draw at struggling Atalanta.

It was however a better story for the other capital club, Lazio, as they defeated Empoli 2-0. Udinese versus Chievo ended in a stalemate, with both sides ending the game with 10-men.

Verona continued their march to Serie B, as they lost once again, this time 1-2 at home to fellow strugglers, Frosinone.

Carpi secured a morale-boosting 4-1 win over Genoa as the fight against relegation continues, while Bologna were beaten 1-0 at home by Torino.

Christian Brocchi started his reign at AC Milan with a 1-0 win at Sampdoria as they continue the chase for a place in the Champions League next season.

As it stands on the table, Juventus have opened a nine-point gap, following their win and Napoli’s loss. AS Roma however failed to capitalize on that to narrow the difference between them and second place but they remain third despite the 3-3 draw.

Inter are fourth, while Fiorentina and AC Milan are fifth and sixth respectively.

At the foot of the table, Verona’s loss takes them another step closer to a return to Serie B, while Carpi stay out of the relegation zone with their impressive win. Palermo and Frosinone are the two other teams that occupy the relegation places, but Carpi, Udinese, Sampdoria, Atalanta and Bologna    could all still drop depending on results between now and the end of the season.
