The first teams drawn were Spanish club Sevilla and Ukrainians Shakhtar.
Sevilla beat Shakhtar 10 years ago when they retained the Uefa Cup. There was a 2-2 draw in Spain and Ukraine. Sevilla goalkeeper Andrés Palop scored the equalizer himself and Ernesto Chevantón nailed the winner in extra time.
The second semi-final will be between Liverpool and Villarreal. The two clubs have never met before in European competition. The first leg will be in Spain and then the second at Anfield, Liverpool.
Villarreal or Liverpool will be registered as the home side for the final in Basel in May.
“Yesterday night, we could live some of the strongest emotions that football can offer. The atmosphere in the stadiums was tremendous and we have to pay tribute also to the teams that contested the qualification until the very last minute or penalties but were finally eliminated,” said Marchetti.
