Dutch outfit PSV Eindhoven progressed into the UEFA Champions League round of 16 at the expense of Ahmed Musa’s CSKA Moscow on Tuesday at the Philips Stadion.
The Nigerian international who played the entire duration of the encounter and his team mates failed to hold on to their lead as goals from Luuk de Jong and Davy Pröpper overturned a one-goal deficit in dramatic fashion.
Sergei Ignashevich’s penalty threatened a shock at the Philips Stadion but the hosts prevailed in the closing stages to knock Manchester United down into third place following a 3-2 defeat to Bundesliga side Wolfsburg.
In a scrappy match at the PSV Stadion in Eindhoven, the hosts attempted just 399 passes, completing 316 of them. Leonid Slutski’s outfit, meanwhile, succeeded with even fewer – 291 of their 384 attempts reaching their intended target.
PSV had ten shots but only managed three on target during the 2-1 victory against CSKA Moskva. Their guests, who ultimately finish bottom of Group B, enjoyed six attempts, two of which tested the goalkeeper.
