Manchester United returned to winning ways after two consecutive goalless draw in the premier league as a Jesse Lingard second half goal and Juan Mata’s penalty ensured a 2-0 win against West Brom this evening.
West Brom did not concede in four out of the last five away premier league matches going into the game at Old Trafford and kept things really tight against the Red Devils.
The Baggies were tightly set-up at the back by manager Tony Pulis with former Manchester United defender Johnny Evans marshalling the backline while Captain Darren Fletcher provided cover from midfield as they restricted Louis van Gaal’s men to just two chances in the goalless first half. Juan Mata shot went just wide before Anthony Martial’s right foot drive was served by Glyn Myhill in goal for the away team.
However, six minutes into the second half Manchester United found a way past the resilient Baggies defense as Jesse Lingard curled a beautiful right foot shot from the edge of the box into the bottom corner of the net to give United a 1-0 lead.
Louis van Gaal swapped Phil Jones for Ashley Young while West Brom brought on Saido Berahino and Ricky Lambert for Salomon Rondon and James Morrison. Berahino should had put West Brom on level terms but his header from inside the six-yard box with only David de Gea to beat went awkwardly wide.
The last 15 minutes saw a debut for 18-year-old Cameron Borthwick-Jackson who replaced Marcos Rojo as United shored up their defense. Anthony Martial won a late penalty and Gareth McAuley was shown a straight red card for the foul –Mata stepped up and finished to make it 2-0.
It was the first time Manchester United had scored more than one in six matches and not conceding today made it five consecutive clean sheets in all competitions.
