After losing out on Bayern Munich attacking midfielder Mario Gotze, Jurgen Klopp’s alternative is Southampton’s Saido Mane.
The news has upset quarters of the Reds support, mainly because they were previously frustrated that Liverpool bought so many Southampton players instead of being more ambitious.
However Mane would still improve the current Reds squad, especially since they don’t have a proper winger and Mane could slot all the way across the attacking midfield positions, and could also play upfront.
The Senegal attacker has done well on the right wing for the Saints, and that’s the position Liverpool is looking at strengthening. The problem with the Reds setup is that they have too many no.10’s. Jordan Ibe is the only out and out winger, but his performance levels have been poor.
Gotze would’ve been another no.10, so in effect Mane may be more suitable to provide balance in the squad.
The 24-year-old Mane has scored 15 goals in all competitions for Southampton, so he gets involved and scores, but most of all he has that injection of pace the Reds lack.
The only stumbling block is that he could cost around 25 million pounds, and the Reds would be wary of taking a risk at that price. However with Manchester United and Tottenham also interested, any move wouldn’t even be a foregone conclusion.
