Stoke City captain Ryan Shawcross is happy he kept Chelsea striker Diego Costa quiet as the Potters handed the Premier League champions their seventh defeat of the 2015/16 season.
Costa and the England international had a running battle throughout the encounter but it was Marko Arnautovic that made all the difference with the match winner at the Britannia Stadium in the absence of the visitors’ banned manager Jose Mourinho.
Shawcross was quick to reveal his delight after the game especially as he triumphed in his personal battle with the Brazilian-born Spain international who continues to have a poor season.
“Diego Costa gets in your face, he wants to bully you so you have to stand up to him,” he told Sky Sports.
“He is a fantastic player who plays close to the line, so to keep him quiet is fantastic.
“We have a fantastic spirit and a good team now. Look how many Champions League winners’ medals we’ve got in the squad now.”
Chelsea dropped to 16th on the premier league log with just 11 points after 12 matches while Stoke City who also knocked the Blues out of the Capital One Cup, sit 12th with 16 points.
