The January transfer window is an opportunity for teams to re-strengthen their squad and plug leakage where necessary but two teams must desired of it Manchester United and Aston Villa failed to do so as the window closed yesterday.
Manchester United may just have done their title chances a huge blow after they failed to make any signing in the just closed January window.
The Red Devils are currently struggling with a lot of injuries with the squad as the likes of Bastian Schweinsteiger, Matteo Darmain, Antonio Valencia, Luke Shaw, Ashley Young and Marcos Rojo on the treatment table.
The team has also struggled to score with Anthony Martial and Wayne Rooney carrying the goalscoring burden – the January transfer window presented manager Louis van Gaal to reinforce his team but the Dutchman failed to respond maybe because he had already spent £250m at the summer and feared criticisms on further spendings.
Aston Villa on the other hand are serious candidates for relegation now after they lost key transfer targets to fellow strugglers Sunderland and Newcastle United who got Wahbi Khazri and Seydou Doumbia respectively.
Former Lyon manager Remy Garde is a worried man as he has found the Premier League a tough place since he arrived at the club and may have to prepare the team for the championship next season.
Villa were destroyed by Manchester City in the fourth round of the FA Cup in front of their home fans at the weekend by 4-0 courtesy a hat-trick from Nigerian international Kelechi Iheanacho and a goal from Raheem Sterling.
That was the final weekend before the transfer deadline and fans had hoped the defeat will spur them into making buys just like Arsene Wenger did when Manchester United pummeled his young lads by 8-2 some seasons back.
It will take a miracle for Aston Villa to escape relegation from this point but in football, you can never say never.
Manchester United are currently placed fifth with 37 points in the Premier League, ten points adrift leaders Leicester City while Aston Villa sit rock bottom with just 13 points after 23 matches.
