Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone has stated that they are in ‘decent shape’ going into tonight’s second leg, round of 16 Champions League game against PSV.
The Spanish club host their Dutch counterparts at the Vicente Calderon on Tuesday night on the back of four wins and two draws in their last six games in all competitions and are favourites to go through.
Speaking ahead of the game, Simeone reckoned they are in good shape heading into the game and said he expects them to continue with the good form against the Dutch champions.
“The team is in decent shape. We have been going well in recent matches and we expect to continue that way on Tuesday,” he said in his pre-match interview.
He also added that he hopes the in-form striker Antoine Griezmann can continue his good run in front of goal.
“I hope Griezmann continues responding to the team needs as he has been doing and like the rest of the squad. We have to score one goal more than our opponents.”
The Argentine manager also spoke of how his team will most likely line up for the game.
“We are thinking of playing a 4-3-3 and we will try to make sure the match plays to our strengths.
“PSV are good on the counterattack; they play very well with space, their second line is dangerous and they are good at dead-ball situations. [Luuk] de Jong is an important player and the main point of reference for his team.”
The first leg ended goalless at the Phillips Stadion in Eindhoven a fortnight ago.
Real Madrid forward Karim Benzema has revealed that Brazilian football legend Ronaldo de Lima is the greatest footballer ever and he tried to model his game after the player.
The former Lyon superstar has huge admiration for the World Cup winner and still watches videos of him in order to try and improve his own game.
“When I was younger, the way the Brazilian Ronaldo played had an influence on me,” the 81-cap France forward told the Bwin website.
“For me he’s the best striker and the best player of all-time.
“I watch videos of him, and try to do what he does, but it’s not easy. It’s impossible to pull off the same moves as he did.”
Benzema currently stands a huge risk of missing out on the Euro 2016 after he was embroiled in controversy and charged as part of the investigation into an alleged sex tape blackmail plot aimed at his fellow international team-mate Mathieu Valbuena.
Ronaldo enjoyed a successful career with PSV, Barcelona, Inter, Real Madrid, AC Milan and also enjoyed success with Brazil’s national team.
Former Manchester United forward Ruud van Nistelrooy says he is ready for his new role at PSV after he left his position as assistant manager of Netherlands to handle the club’s youth sides.
Nistelrooy will not be a part of his country’s 2018 World Cup qualifying campaign and the Royal Dutch Football Association (KNVB) will need to get coach Danny Blind a new assistant as the Netherland’s look to rebuild their squad after their shock failure to reach Euro 2016.
Nistelrooy will coach PSV’s Under-17, Under-19 and reserve sides – something he has previously done on an informal basis.
“I have learned a lot in the past two years,” Van Nistelrooy said in a statement on the KNVB’ official website. “Not only at the [UEFA] trainer course, but also on the pitch with PSV Under-17s and reserves. And how beautiful it is as a coach starting out to be involved with the Dutch team.
“In my time as an international player I’ve worked with the technical staff and I never realised how much time and effort this required.
“For my development as a coach this was a valuable experience. I will always keep in mind the fantastic way of working together with the players and staff. I’m grateful to the KNVB that they gave me this chance.”
Unknown Nigerian youngster Tosin Kehinde was in brilliant form for Manchester United as he scored the winner against Wolfsburg in the UEFA Youth League.
The 18-year-old who was loaned out to Lille of France last season was instrumental for the young Devils as he orchestrated play from midfield and United’s controlled possession yielded to the first goal of the game as Axel Tuanzebe grabbed the first goal inside the VfL Stadion in Germany.
Kehinde was on hand in the second half to help increase the lead when his low drive rolled into the corner of the net to the delight of the coaches on the touchline but he soon made way for Callum Whelan in the 63rd minute of the encounter as United ran out 2-0 winners.
However, the win wasn’t enough to send the young Devils into the next round as PSV and CSKA Moscow qualified instead.
Tonight, Manchester United first team will battle Wolfsburg in their final Group B match of the UEFA Champions League as they bid to make it into the knock-out stages.
Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney ended the team’s three games goal drought by scoring the only goal as they defeated CSKA Moscow in the Match-Day-Four of the UEFA Champions League game played at Old Trafford tonight.
Manchester United controlled the possession but failed to break the away team defense for the first 45 minutes, making it seven hours of football without a goal for the Old Trafford side.
Rooney flashed a shot wide from inside the box and Mata raced onto a glorious pass from Daley Blind on the quarter hour mark but his shot was tame and an easy save for Igor Akinfeev in goal for CSKA Moscow.
Nigerian star Ahmed Musa was a constant threat to the Red Devils backline as Daley Blind and Chris Smalling but they held him off for a goalless first half.
Louis van Gaal’s side still controlled possession in the second half but no end product and the Red Devils fans voiced their angered when star man Anthony Martial was substituted for Marouane Fellaini while Memphis Depay came on for Juan Mata.
Ivorian star Seydou Doumbia came on for Bebras Natcho and nearly opened scoring for the Russians but he was thwarted by David de Gea and Chris Smalling which proved a turning point in the game as Jess Lingard at the other end created an assist for Wayne Rooney to poke home his header for his 30th UEFA Champions League goal to hand Manchester United an important win.
Manchester United now lead Group B with seven points while PSV who defeated Wolfsburg sit second with six points, same with the Germans with CSKA Moscow bottom on four points.
Super Eagles captain Ahmed Musa was in his element for Russian side CSKA Moscow in the UEFA Champions League match against Manchester United but was unable to help them to victory as they played out a 1-1 draw at home.
The Nigeria’s pace caused the Red Devils backline problems and it wasn’t a surprise as the Russian sides quick play forced Anthony Martial to handled the ball inside the 18yard box for a cheap penalty. Roman Eremenko’s spot kick was saved by David de Gea in goal for United but Seydou Doumbia scored from the rebound.
That goal spurred the English team into action as they controlled possession in search of an equalizer but that created a situated for counter-attacks and Musa nearly scored from 25 yards as his right foot shot was parried over by de Gea end it 1-0 in the first half.
Manchester United still controlled possession in the second period and Jesse Lingaard making his first start in the champions league early scored when played in by Wayne Rooney but his tame shot was easily saved by Igor Akinfeev.
However, the Red Devils got the equalizer through star man Anthony Martial who headed in an Antonio Valencia cross from the right past the helpless Akinfeev.
In the other group game in Group B, German side Wolfsburg beat PSV 2-0 to go top of the log after three matches so far.
