NPFL: Akwa United not scared of Enyimba

Ahead of today’s Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) fixture between Akwa United and Enyimba, the Uyo based team has declared their readiness to face the current league champions.

Akwa United needs to improve with six games to the end of the season to avoid her annual relegation battle while Enyimba wants to consolidate her place as the defending champion.

Both sides met on the 24th of April at the Nest of Champion, less than two months after meeting at the Abuja International Stadium for the Charity Cup.

The reigning Federation Cup winner defeated the League Champion through penalties after a goalless draw in the regulation time – Theophilus Afelokhai and Ifeanyi George missed their kick to hand Akwa United their third trophy of the year.

However,  Akwa United manager Maurice Cooreman would wished he could trade the Charity Cup for a win after the Match Day 13 encounter with Enyimba brought his imminent suspension.

In a swift counter attacking move, Former Sharks’ point man, Christian Pyagbara’s goal in the 38th minutes gave Enyimba their first away win of the season and Akwa United second home defeat in four games .

Paul Bassey sanctioned the suspension of the Belgian with Dokubo , Cooreman ‘s assistant as replacement .

Dokubo lost 3-1 to MFM in his first game in charge after a poor performance at the Agege Stadium. Bassey Akpan became the number one choice goalkeeper under the “new coach” .

Cooreman’s three defeats in ten games after his return has edge his team for a quest to a continental challenge.

Match Day 25, 2-1 win comeback over Kano pillars after trailing by a goal in the first half scored by debutant, Amos Gyan and the equalizing goal by Ubong Friday in the 75th minutes against Plateau united in Week 26 is an indicator that the tactician might break the jinx of not wining away to Enyimba.

“We are training Morning and Evening in readiness for Enyimba clash on Saturday, we don’t have any serious injuries in the team . Cooreman is back and the technical crew is one “Uwem Ekoh said.

The media Officer also stated emphatically that Akwa United will defeat Enyimba on Saturday.

“In as much as we are not underestimating Enyimba , we respect them but we will defeat them in Port Harcourt.”
