Arsenal’s teenage star, Alex Iwobi is proud to see Nigeria clinch one of Africa’s three slots in the men’s football tournament for next year’s Olympics in Rio 366football.com.
Iwobi who wasn’t released by the Gunners for the tournament took to twitter to congratulate the team for their success.
The Samson Siasia side struggled to beat hosts Senegal 1-0 in the first semi-final of the Under-23 Africa Cup of Nations to earn a place in Saturday’s final.
Stand-in skipper for the Eagles Peter Etebo scored the key goal from the penalty spot after Senegal’s Ousseynou Thioune, handled the ball as he collided with his goalkeeper, Pape Ndiaye.
“Congrats To Nigeria U23s Qualifying , Proud Of My Nation.” Iwobi tweeted.
Nigeria will now face the winner of Algeria and South Africa in the second semi-final later on Wednesday evening while Senegal now face a crucial third-place match on Saturday, with the winners also earning a place in Brazil.
Also Olympic team skipper Nwankwo Kanu congratulated the current national U-23 side for qualifying for the Men’s Olympic Football Tournament in Rio next year.
Kanu, a gold medal winner of the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta took to twitter in praising coach Samson Siasia for achieveing the feat twice with the team.
“Congrats Siasia and your coaching staff and congrats to the players.Well done and let’s go to Brazil and do our country proud.”
The tournament kicks-off from the 5th of August to the 21st.
