NPFL Match Day 10: Fuel Scarcity and  fans turn out

366FOOTBALL, Nigeria Supporters Club

The Match Day Ten of the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) may record its lowest turnout yet this season due to the nail biting fuel scarcity currently been experienced in the country.

The non-availability of fuel products have led to a horrendous hike in pump prices yet the queues at filling stations are criminally too long and frustrating for consumers.

Many fans of the league may be caught up in these queues trying to get fuel for their cars or generators as the light situation in the country currently is appalling.

Our domestic league is witnessing a massive return of fans to the venues for games especially in Lagos where top flight football returned after many years.

The MFM game against Kano Pillars that ended 1-1 at the Agege stadium had a UEFA Champions League feel as it was played under floodlights with lots of fans not able to gain entry because it was so jam-packed inside and at the end of the day despite the draw everyone celebrated and that was a perfect advertisement for the game locally.

In Aba and Kano the turnouts have been regularly very positive and this season it has gone up a notch from previous seasons. The Aba Elephants records 30,000 fans for their home games while in Kano they have no rivals when it comes to a full house for every home game and both teams have a sizeable number of traveling fans too.

The oriental derby between Rangers and Enyimba which ended 2-1 in favour of the Flying Antelopes could easily go down as the highest turnout this season as fans cheered their teams on in a game that showed the rich talents of Nigerian Football.

It’s amazing when you watch Shooting Stars (3SC) home games and see fans banter on the stands, makes you have an urge to join in and sing out loud – that’s the feel, having a sense of belongingness for a team gives you.

NPFL Fans are beginning to celebrate local players like they do with their foreign counter-parts and while players like Rabiu Ali, Mfon Udoh, Chinedu Udoji, Odinga Odinga are already household names, players like Abia Warriors forward Chisom Chikatara who is bound for a move away from the league, MFM’s Ifeanyi Ifeanyi, and Kano Pillars Prince Aggrey are already endearing themselves into the hearts of football lovers across the country.

Today, there will be massive games across the country in the NPFL and the fans are a huge part of good football match just like we see with European matches especially the Barclays Premier League which we all love.

Yes, there is a terrifying fuel scarcity but anywhere you are if you can, please go to the stadium near you and encourage these brilliant talents of Nigerian football.
