NWSL: Spirit dismiss Falcons’ forward Okobi


National Women Super League side the Washington Spirit have confirmed parting ways with Super Falcons striker Ngozi Sonia Okobi.

The Nigerian international joined the Spirit after participating in the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup where she linked up with compatriot and national team mate Francisca Ordega.

A statement by the club on its official confirmed that the club has waived Okobi for the new season.

“We would like to wish Sonia good luck and thank her for all she did for the Spirit.” Said the Spirit general manager and head coach Jim Gabarra.

Okobi played in four games for the Spirit after joining the team toward the end of the 2015 NWSL season.

The 22-year old played the 2008 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup, 2010 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup and 2012 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup with the Falconets.

At senior level (Super Falcons), Okobi was part of the squads at the African Women’s Championship tournaments of 2010, 2012 and 2014, winning two of them (2010 and 2014). She also played for Nigeria at the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
