On fire Olunga continues with fine streak

Kenyan international Michael Olunga’s fine run in the Swedish Premier League continued on Monday night with a goal, his eighth of the season as his team, Djugardens IF registered a 3 – 1 win over second placed Norrkoping.

The former Gor Mahia striker, who bagged the Kenyan Premier League (KPL) Player of the Year Award in 2015 before leaving for Sweden, has flourished under new coach Mark Dempsey and the goal was his eighth in nine matches, helping the team recover from the earlier defeat to AIF Fotball in the Stockholm derby.

Against Norrkoping it was a goalless first half but Niklas Gunnarsson broke the deadlock on the 50th minute before Olunga doubled the lead five minutes later. Kalle Holmberg netted for the hosts on the 62nd minute in a hint of a comeback but substitute Daniel Bernstein struck the third to kill the hosts’ hopes of a comeback.

El Kabir laid a pass to Olunga and the former Gor Mahia striker turned his marker inside out before unleashing a left-foot shot into the back of the net to secure the points for the visiting side.

The match was Olunga’s 22nd league appearance for the side. They next host Orebro in a round 25 match on Sunday 2 October at Tele2 Arena.
