Nigeria players abroad wrap: Iheanacho scores, Obi injured

Nigeria Players Abroad

As the leagues across Europe gradually hit a crescendo, fcnaija once again takes a look at how Nigeria players abroad have fared in Europe this past weekend.

And we start with some cheery news from the Bundesliga as Anthony Ujah returned to scoring ways with his 10th goal of the campaign but it wasn’t the expected result as he and his Werder Bremen teammates slumped to a 2-1 defeat at Hamburg.

It was a similar case also for Leon Balogun and Mainz, as they were beaten by the same scoreline by Eintracht Frankfurt.

And the same happened in France for Vincent Enyeama as his Lille side were beaten 2-1 in the final of the French League Cup by PSG. He was in goal as usual but couldn’t help them win the trophy. Meanwhile, Elderson Echiejile served out his suspension after being sent off last weekend.

Joel Obi had a weekend to forget in Serie A as he suffered yet another injury during warm-up and as a result couldn’t feature in Torino’s 1-3 home loss to Sassuolo. Ogenyi Onazi started for the second game in a row but couldn’t replicate last weekend’s form as they went down 2-1 at Sampdoria. He was on for the entire duration.

Kenneth Omeruo was not listed as his Kasimpasa side were beaten 4-1 by Galatasaray. The central defender has been in fine form for the club this term but was not part of the match day squad this time.

While Godfrey Oboabona saw action for the whole 90 minutes, he could do very little or nothing to help his team as they lost 3-1 at Konyaspor. Aminu Umar however had a better fortune as while he also featured for the entire duration, he was also on the winning side as Osmanlispor defeated Antalyaspor 3-0. His compatriot, Raheem Lawal was a 71st minute entrant into the game.

Down a division, Nigeria’s Afcon 2013 hero Sunday Mba and Nigeria under-23 captain Okechukwu Azubuike were both in action for the full 90 minutes as Yeni Malatyaspor could only manage a 1-1 draw at Adana Demirspor. Another Nigeria, Izu Azuka saw the entire game from the bench.

Kelechi Iheanacho shone the brightest of compatriots in England as his two goals helped propel Manchester City to an emphatic 4-0 win over Stoke City and almost cement their place in next season’s Champions League.

It was also a good outing for Super Eagles goalkeeper Carl Ikeme as he kept his 10th clean sheet in Wolves’ goalless draw against Rotherham in the Championship.

John Obi Mikel played his second game as a central defender for Chelsea as they won 4-1 at Bournemouth, while Alex Iwobi fired blanks in Arsenal’s barren draw with Sunderland. He last 71 minutes before being replaced.

Odion Ighalo’s goal drought continued as Watford were beaten 2-1 by Crystal Palace in the FA Cup semi-final. He couldn’t help his team win despite lasting the entire duration.
