Leading CAF Champions League highest goals scorer Mfon Udoh is gutted by Enyimba’s failure to reach the semi-final stage of the competition despite his prolific form in the current campaign.
Udoh who is NPFL’s top scorer of all time landed another career milestone on Tuesday night with two goals in Enyimba’s 3-1 victory over South African outfit Mamelodi Sundowns in Port Harcourt, taking his season’s CAF CL tally to nine goals.
The former Akwa United man in an interview with FCnaija.com expressed gratitude to God for the milestone but insists a semi-final slot with the Peoples Elephant would have been a perfect headline for the Nigerian nation as a whole and not some personal glory.
“I’d like to state that it was God Almighty that inspired me, so I’m returning to him all the praises. I am delighted to have scored my ninth goal of the CAF Champions League campaign which is a club record in the history of the competition but i would have wished that we qualified for the semi-final stage. That for me would have been more fulfilling.
“We are all disappointed with our exit because we know how this tournament meant to not just Enyimba as a club but to all Nigerians who have showed us tremendous support despite our poor strings of performances.
“The new career landmark feels good and i know it will only spur me to work harder. I couldn’t have achieved this feat on my own, so I’m using this opportunity to say a big thank you to all my team-mates for their assists and support on and off the pitch. Dem too much!!” Udoh said.
The leading CAF Champions League scorer who had not scored in four Champions League matches since claiming a hat-trick in a qualifying victory over Etoile Sahel of Tunisia last April regained his scoring touch with the brace which was a mere consolation.
Udoh who is the only Nigerian in the 2015 CAF CL top scorers chart is now three goals ahead of second placed Reda Hajhouj of Morocco who plays for Wydad Casablanca as a winger. Hajhouj is still in the competition.
