Fellaini could face ban after elbowing Liverpool’s Can

Marouane Fellaini is facing a potential ban after appearing to elbow Emre Can in the face during Manchester United’s defeat by Liverpool in the Europa League last 16 on Thursday.

The first European clash between the two most successful English clubs ended in a 2-0 defeat for Louis van Gaal’s side at Anfield – and, to make matters worse, United could lose their Belgium midfielder for three European games.

The off-the-ball incident happened during the closing stages of the game but was missed by Spanish referee Carlos Velasco Carballo, although UEFA could still take retrospective action.

Meanwhile Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp said after the game: “It was good, yeah? From the first second to the last second, with the exception of a few minutes in the second half.

“They didn’t create a lot of chances. Scoring the second goal was crucial. We are in a good position now and we want to go to the next round.

“We need to play again like we did. We need to use the time we have before the second leg and we are looking forward to it. We would have liked to win by more but the result is ok. This is a night were I can give a lot of good grades to my players.

“We had some really big chances, 2-0 is the perfect result. There is a lot of things we can improve but there are a lot of things that were very good.

“I don’t want to set a limit for my players but I do not think we are through. We can run further, we can play better,” he added.
