Liverpool Football Club has been the talk of Europe after their dramatic last-gasp victory against Dortmund on Thursday night. Then the next day they were drawn with Villarreal for the semi-final of the Europa League.
Here’s our compilation of the reaction from players, coach, legends and fans to that amazing night and the draw.
Firstly on drawing Villarreal, for variety we begin with a legend from the Spanish club:
Marcos Senna, former Villarreal player
We are going to a historic stadium where it’s amazing to play. It’s what we wanted – we want to play the final against Sevilla, but that is a way off yet. We have to keep doing what we have been doing in the previous rounds. The team are very well prepared. There are no favourites any more.
Fan reaction to the draw:
Luke Smith: A good draw for Liverpool. Sevilla, like us, need to win the competition to ensure Champions League football next year. Shakhtar Donetsk are basically playing for their entire country right now. Both very dangerous and recent winners of the competition. I fancy us to progress through to the final (especially with the second leg at Anfield).
Rob Frost: We scored 5 at yellow shirt wearing Norwich, 4 at home to yellow shirt wearing BVB, we now have another 2 games against a team in yellow shirts, whose nickname translates to match the name of a Beatles song and film. “All together now”… “We all live on a Red and White Kop…” or (after his smack down of Jason Cundy last night) “We all dream of a team of Carraghers…”
Talking about that great victory against Dortmund, let’s read from the horses mouth.
Captain Jordan Henderson who couldn’t play because of injury stated after the game on Twitter: Amazing scenes tonight at anfield, that’s what it’s all about! Fans were out of this world! Well done lads #YNWA
The captain on the pitch was James Milner:
“That (creating assists) has always been a strength of mine, creating goals over the years,” he said.
“A lot of people see me as a runner, but I feel creating goals is one of my qualities and hopefully I can keep doing it.”
“He (Jurgen Klopp) reminded us of a situation where this club has come through a similar situation before.
“He obviously mentioned a certain night in Istanbul and said there have been other great nights in this club’s history from a similar position so he said go out and see what happens.”
Coach Jurgen Klopp himself:
“It was an outstanding atmosphere,” said Klopp. “We need experiences like this. We now have a milestone, that’s good, really good.”
“Tonight is special, I won’t forget it.”
Then there’s the legend Jan Molby who wrote in his column in the Echo:
“It’s always difficult to rank European nights but what Liverpool achieved against Borussia Dortmund has to be right up there. To come back like they did from 4-2 down on aggregate and score three goals in the final 24 minutes was remarkable.
“That kind of fight and resolve is ingrained in the DNA of Liverpool FC. We’ve seen it time and time again over the years – that ability to pull through when the odds are stacked against you. It’s like the players take belief from what they know this club has done in the past. They never give up. They are inspired by the past.”
