Manchester United legend Gary Neville says he expects Jose Mourinho to wield the axe on his squad over the next six months after another poor defensive display saw them lose 4-0 to Chelsea.
The former Manchester United defender described his former side’s defending as ‘shoddy’ and believes the Portuguese boss will not be gun-shy in getting rid of dead wood.
“I think that today they got a little bit shoddy in the second half. It was embarrassing from [Paul] Pogba and [Ander] Herrera. Kante just walked through them. They are the central midfield players,” Neville was quoted by the Daily Mirror.
“The first goal was just a joke, gifting a goal after 30 seconds.
“I think he’ll drive a bus through the club in the next six months because he won’t be accepting defending like that. We’ve seen it before with Jose they’ll be gone.
The former Valencia coach also believes it is not only the defence that needs an overhaul according, as he also says United are without an effective central midfield partnership despite all the money spent in the area.
“About three years ago there was a lot of talk about how Manchester United hadn’t signed a defensive midfielder for years.
“They’ve signed about £180m of midfield players, Fellaini, Herrera, Schneiderlin, Pogba, I don’t know what pair I can say are a good pair.
“Carrick actually looks like he still gives the most balance. The other four, there doesn’t seem to be a pair between them.”
