Injured Arsenal defender Per Mertesacker has promised to hit 20 goals when he returns to action for the club, thereby asking that no striker should be linked with the club again.
The German suffered a knee injury in the Gunners’ pre-season friendly against Lens on last week and has since gone under the knife and he is expected to be out for up to five months.
Reacting to his successful surgery, Mertesacker thanked the Arsenal fans for their messages of support, and promised to score 20 goals for them when he returns.
“Thanks for all the get well soon messages. Doc said he built in a 20 goals guarantee. No striker rumours anymore,” he tweeted.
Already, Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has admitted that Mertesacker’s injury means they have to get another experienced central defender to the club, even as he says he isn’t sure how long the former Germany international will be out for.
“I know you will ask me for how long he will be out. I don’t know that, it’s [some] months, but I don’t know [exactly] how long he will be out for,” he said in a press conference in their pre-season tour of the United States.
“We have to look for an option to get a bit more experience. We will see some of our young centre backs on Thursday as well.
“With Per being out, we are a bit short on the experience front and we are looking to bring somebody in.”
