Oshoala, others must respond at Wembley – Williamson

Arsenal Ladies star Leah Williamson has called on team Nigeria’s Azizat Oshoala and other members of the North London outfit to forget Thursday’s league defeat to Eniola Aluko’s Chelsea and show a positive reaction when they host the Bridge Girls again next month in the Women’s FA Cup final at Wembley.

Oshoala who was a substitute on Thursday, replacing Corredera Rued just before the restart could was unable to avert a home defeat as her side were beaten 2-0 at Meadow Park, with Fran Kirby scoring in each half to secure all three points for the Blues.

But Williamson believes the Super League defeat against Chelsea will have no bearing on next month’s Women’s FA Cup final.

“We are obviously bitterly disappointed. Although it is early in the season you know these are big games.

“It brings out issues early and, while I would rather there were no issues, it shows us what we need to work on. It is unfortunate but the only positive side is we have the rest of the season to pick ourselves and another cup final to avenge this game.

“It will be massively different. This pitch [at Meadow Park] is half the size of Wembley. The FA Cup is all about who turns up on the day. You have seen that with Sporting Club Albion getting so far in the competition.

“If you turn up on the day wanting it that badly, then you win. I have never played in front of as many people that are expected to be there, so I think the whole occasion adds a lot to the game and it will be very different.” Williamson told Arsenal Player

Oshoala will have her focus set on avenging the 2-0 home defeat when the two teams meet again in the on May 14 at Wembley even as Williamson insists Thursday’s defeat will not give Chelsea the edge at Wembley.
