Manchester United were knocked out of the Capital One Cup by Championship side Middlesbrough via penalties thanks to the heroics of goalkeeper Tomas Osorio at Old Trafford this evening.
Aitor Karanka side came into the encounter wanting to press and close spaces and they succeeded as the first opening fell to the away side but George Friend failed to place his shot past Sergio Romero in goal after a lob from leadbitter put him through on goal.
At the other end the Red Devils neat interplay created their first shot on target on 34 minutes but James Wilson’s tame effort was gathered easily by the keeper. Minutes later Memphis Depay having a bad night had just defender Ayala to beat but he hesitated and the covering Kalas nipped the ball off him.
Boro nearly took the lead on the stroke of half-time as Steven Downing rocketed a shot from 25yards but was met by a superb save from Romero to end the half goalless.
Louis van Gaal introduced Wayne Rooney at the start of the second half but it was the visitors that had the ball at the back of the net, however, the assistant referee flagged for offside despite Daley Blind having the last touch.
Memphis created a fine opening for himself inside the box but completely missed his shot. Romero again pulled up another fine stop to keep United level.
With 20 minutes left, Anothny Martial was introduced for Memphis Depay and immediately made his impact felt as he won a corner.
However, it was the visitors that nearly won the game but Romero maintained great composure to pull off two brilliant saves to take the match into extra time.
Manchester United dominated the 30 minutes played at extra time but Boro held on to force a penalty shoot-out.
Spanish goalkeeper Tomas Orosio was the hero as he saved from Captain Wayne Rooney and Ashley Young while Michael Carrick booted his shot way over the cross bar to hand Middlesbrough a 3-1 penalty win.
