In a bid to beef up its squad ahead of the new Globacom Nigeria Professional Premier League season and the continental challenge, Akwa United have completed the signing of AFCON U23 winner Kufre Ebong.
Ebong who was part of the coach Samson Siasia led victorious side in the recently concluded 2015 CAF U23 Championship in Senegal returns to Akwa United after just a season away from the club, having spent the 2014/15 season at Warri Wolves, finding the back of the net on just three occasions.
Confirming Ebong’s new deal with the Promise Keepers to 366football.com, Fred Akpaidem who manages the youngster said;
“Ebong has returned to Akwa United and it’s a done deal. He has penned a one-year deal with the club for an undisclosed fee.” Akpaidem stated.
The Nigerian youth international was handed his debut in the Glo NPFL by the then coach of Akwa United Patrick Udoh in the 2013/14 season. He was one of the outstanding players for the Uyo based outfit that season alongside notable names like Ezekiel Bassey and Godspower Aniefiok who are now doing their business with Enyimba FC and Kano Pillars respectively.
Ebong scored a handful of goals and provided several assists while with Akwa –a feat that didn’t go unnoticed as Warri Wolves came calling for his services at the beginning of the 2014/15 season. Having found playing time hard to come by, he was rumored to have been approached by Akwa last summer, but was denied a move by the Seasiders. The 19-year soon got a look in by Paul Aighbogun and he became an integral part of the side that lost the league title to Enyimba by four points.
