It was the last weekend of action before yet another international break, and as we do every Mondays, we bring to you the exploits of Nigerian players abroad. Which of the players saw action, which didn’t? All these and more will be discussed on this week’s edition of the Naija players abroad wrap.
For the first time this season, Manchester City were beaten and Kelechi Iheanacho could do nothing about it. The 20-year old (today is his 20th birthday, so happy birthday to him) was introduced by Pep Guardiola in the 65th minute as they sought for a way back, and even though he had a couple of pops at goal, he and his teammates still went down 2-0 to Tottenham Hotspur.
And at the King Power Stadium, Nigeria vice-captain Ahmed Musa was not listed for Leicester as they were held to a 0-0 draw at home by Southampton.
It was a completely different case for Alex Iwobi, however, as the youngster once against started for Arsenal and lasted 71 minutes in their 1-0 win over Burnley. His compatriot and teammate, Chuba Akpom was not listed.
It was the same story for John Obi Mikel, as his absence from the Chelsea first team continued, even though he was reported to be nursing an injury prior to their 2-0 defeat of Hull City. He is yet to play for the Blues this season. It wasn’t the same for Victor Moses, who got his first Premier League start of the season, playing in an unfamiliar right wing-back position. He got a 71st minute booking but lasted the entire duration.
Meanwhile, Moses Odubajo remains out for Hull as he is still recovering from an injury.
Elsewhere, Nigeria youth international Isaac Success scored his first-ever goal for Watford, coming off the bench in the 58th minute, in place of Odion Ighalo, who fired blanks, as they came back to hold Bournemouth to a 2-2 draw.
In the Championship, Carl Ikeme conceded twice in Wolves’ 2-1 home loss to Norwich. The other Nigerian at the club, Dominic Iorfa played the entire duration at the heart of the defence but couldn’t help Ikeme keep a clean sheet.
Hope Akpan continued his bench role for Blackburn Rovers as they lost 1-0 at Birmingham.
Vincent Enyeama returned to winning ways with his club and he did that in style, keeping a clean sheet as Lille defeated Nancy 1-0.
Leon Balogun remained out with injury, while Karim Onisiwo played 90 minutes in Mainz’s goalless draw at Wolfsburg.
New Super Eagles invitee Uche Agbo wasn’t listed for Granada as they lost 1-0 at home to Leganes.
The duo of Anderson Esiti and Moses Simon started for Gent, but couldn’t prevent Club Brugge from sealing a 1-0 win. While Simon was replaced in the 79th minute by fellow Nigerian Rabiu Ibrahim, Esiti was on for the entire duration.
Meanwhile, Elderson Echiejile was on the bench all through for Standard Liege as they succumbed to a 1-0 home defeat but Wilfried Ndidi played all 90 minutes for Genk in their 2-1 comeback win against Mechelen.
Chukwuemeka Onyekuru opened the scoring for Eupen, but it would prove to be only a consolation as they were thrashed 4-1 by Mouscron. Anthony Bassey also lasted the whole game just like Onyekuru, but George Jamabo was introduced in the 80th minute.
The Nigerian contingent at KuPS – Gbolahan Salami, Azubuike Egwuekwe and Aliyu Abubakar – all featured for the entirety of their club’s 2-0 home loss to Inter Turku. Paul Onobi was however not listed.
Elsewhere, former Nigeria international Taye Taiwo continued on his road to fitness and wasn’t listed, while Nnamdi Oduamadi started but was subbed off in the 80th minute, with Vincent Onovo playing all 90 minutes for HJK Helsinki in their 2-1 defeat to HIFK.
William Troost-Ekong played all 90 minutes and received a 53rd minute yellow card in Haugesund’s 1-1 draw with Sarpsborg 08.
In the Super Lig, Kenneth Omeruo and his Alanyaspor teammates were at the receiving end of some serious bashing, as they were thumped 5-0 by Basaksehir. The Nigerian was on for the entire duration.
Emmanuel Emenike played all through but fired blanks in Fenerbahce’s 1-1 draw at Osmanlispor, who also featured Aminu Umar for the entire duration.
Godfrey Oboabona and Believe Atiemwen were on the losing side with Rizespor, as they were beaten 1-0 at home by Besiktas.
Former Dolphins striker Emem Eduok stayed on the bench all through in Kasimpasa’s 3-1 defeat of Kayserispor.
Former Nigeria U23 striker Kehinde Fatai was on target for Ufa in their 1-1 draw with Amker Perm with the striker lasting 88 minutes. Sylvester Igboun was also on parade for Ufa, playing the entire duration and also picked up a 55th minute booking. Fegor Ogude was at the opposing end, and he was on for the entirety of proceedings.
