Saturday 23 January bore fruitful outings for Kenyan internationals plying their trade in Europe with their teams gaining at least a point from their outings in their various leagues.
In England, Kenya national team skipper Victor Wanyama played the entire game as his Southampton side beat Manchester United 1 – 0 at Old Trafford. Newly signed Charlie Austin got the all important goal on his debut.
In Italy, Wanyama’s brother McDonald Mariga also played the entire match as his new club Latina claimed a 2 – 1 win over hosts Trapani at the Polisportivo Provinciale Stadium.
Latina had to rally from behind having gone down to a Matteo Scozzarella penalty on the fourth minute. Luigi Alberto Scaglia brought Latina level at the stroke of half time and Daniele Corvia scored the winning goal for Latina on the 69th minute.
Out in Belgium’s second tier, Ayub Timbe scored a 13th minute goal to help his team Lierse SK to a 1 – 1 draw with AS Eupen. Lierse were headed for a win until Sergio Rodriguez, a Spaniard, struck on the 90th minute to level.
Still in the Belgian second tier, Johanna Omollo was introduced on the 82nd minute as his team Royal Antwerp beat White Star Bruxelles 4 – 0.
In Greece, another Kenyan international Paul Were was an unused sub as his team, Kalloni beat Panthrakikos 2 – 0 in a league match at the Municipa Stadium.
With the result, Kalloni snapped a 13 – match winless streak but remains bottom of the log.
