The Amakhosi official site has made it clear that they won’t play home games in Cape Town this season. They’re instead going to be in Durban.
“We are excited to announce the Moses Mabhida Stadium as our alternative home venue for this upcoming season,” confirms Kaizer Chiefs Marketing Director, Jessica Motaung.
“The stadium and the partnership details ticked the boxes, from brand association to the logistics checklist,” read the statement on Chiefs’ official site.
“The Cape of Love & Peace was awesome,” reflects Motaung. “However, we are delighted to now give Durban a chance to host the three selected home games. We have always commanded tremendous support in the province of KwaZulu-Natal.”
These are the games that will be played in Durban:
Kaizer Chiefs v Ajax Cape Town: Saturday, 15 October 2016, 18:00 kick-off
Kaizer Chiefs v Baroka FC: Wednesday, 2 November 2016, 19:30 kick-off
Kaizer Chiefs v Highlands Park FC: Saturday, 18 February 2017, 18:00 kick-off
Ticketing and other logistics will be announced in due course.
“The office of our supporters club has already been inundated with calls from fans anticipating this announcement,” comments Motaung. “Behind the scenes, work is already fully underway to make these three games a success. We plan to give the supporters their utmost Gold & Black experience. We also have good memories from a results perspective in Durban.”
In recent years the Amakhosi won the 2015 MTN8 Cup final at the expense of Orlando Pirates, while SuperSport United were on the receiving end in the 2013 Nedbank Cup final at the Moses Mabhida Stadium.
“The players will be buoyant to play under the iconic ‘arch of triumph’, which stands out as a landmark in Durban,” concludes Motaung.
General Manager of Moses Mabhida Stadium, Mr Vusi Mazibuko welcomed the news.
“We are delighted to bring Kaizer Chiefs back to the city of Durban and our stadium where the club has previously hosted their CAF Champions League qualifiers. Historically, Moses Mabhida Stadium has been a good hunting ground for Amakhosi and we look forward to more thrills and action on the pitch this season as the club’s home away from home.”
