Real Madrid’s status as one of the two unbeaten teams in this season’s UEFA Champions League is well intact after the Spanish giants weathered an early storm from hosts AS Roma to carry a 2 – 0 advantage from the first leg of the two teams’ second round faceoff.
Cristiano Ronaldo had a largely quiet game until he burst into the scene on the 57th minute with a classy control and goal after perfectly controlling Marcelo’s cross and hitting well past Wojciech Szczesny.
Even though the ball took a slight deflection past Roma’s skipper for the night, Alessandro Florenzi, the Portuguese star celebrated his 89th Champions League goal.
AS Roma felt aggrieved by a penalty that was not awarded late in the game as Dani Carvajal seemed to foul Florenzi in the box. The referee was not in a charitable mood on the night and the hosts were left fuming.
Real Madrid Manager Zinedine Zidane, featuring for his first Champions League match, pulled a genius, introducing Jese for James Rodriguez on the 82nd minute and the youngster needed just four minutes to put matters beyond the hosts.
The goal bore more of a sucker punch to the hosts as Roma were the more attacking and likeliest to get a goal but a counter attack from Real Madrid saw Jese released and went straight down the wing to drill a shot into the bottom corner and sunk Roma hearts.
The result at the Olympic Stadium will mean Roma requires a very splendid output at the Santiago Bernabeu to dump out Real Madrid.
