Super Eagles and Lazio midfielder Ogenyi Onazi says he is honored to have led the national team to victory in Friday’s international friendly against Mali.
Kelechi Iheanacho was the hero for the Super Eagles on Friday as his solitary strike in the 77th minute was enough to give Nigeria a 1-0 win over their Malian counterparts in a high-profile friendly played in Rouen, France on Friday.
Onazi who was handed the responsibility of leading the Eagles against Mali following the absence of John Obi Mikel took to the social media to express his joy at winning his first game as a captain.
“It is a privileged to lead the national team yesterday to victory, all thanks to my team mate for making the victory possible and making nigeria proud, we hope for more victories ahead. Next game on board.
“Great game guys this is the spirit we going all out for the next game winning should be our culture from today, thanks to the fans who came all the way to support the team God bless you.” Onzai wrote on his Instagram page.
There was not much to cheer between the two teams in the first half of the encounter even though debutant Musa Mohammed and Watford striker Odion Ighalo had decent chances to break the deadlock.
The Eagles of Mali also had their fair moments in the first period but both teams fired blanks in the first half.
With a flury of chances in the second half, the Eagles pressed for a winner and a cool finish by Iheanacho saved the day for the three-time African champions who will now face Luxembourg in their next game.
