Norwich City’s Nigerian duo of Coker Afolabi and Remi Matthews suffered a heavy defeat in the hands of an inspired Memphis Depay led Manchester United U-21 squad yesterday.
Will keane scored five in a 7-0 rout but it was Memphis Depay that ran the rules from midfield in the Barclays Under-21 Premier League game.
Afolabi, an unknown 19-year-old Nigerian who joined the Canaries following a successful trial with the developmental side starred in the same game that had Sergio Romero, Phil Jones, Andreas Pereira, Memphis Depay, and Adnan Januzaj feature for the junior Red Devils.
Afolabi nearly gave away an early penalty when he fouled another familiar face who has tested action with the first team Guillermo Varela but the referee waved on.
But the host qualities immediately came to the fore as Will Keane opened scoring on 13 before adding four more in the, 37, 47, 62, 77 minutes with a penalty from Pereira on 52 minutes and a first goal for Ghanaian import Tim Fosu-Mensah in the 70th minute.
Unfortunately, it was another Nigerian in goal for the visitors Remi Matthews – a game he will want to forgot in a hurry.
The win which was witnessed by just 1,758 fans helped the young Red Devils narrows the gap on leaders Sunderland to a single point.
